To save weight, the roadster was deprived of the roof, side windows, door handles, full windshield and bumpers. Its body consisted of aluminum panels mounted on a steel tubular space frame ("Superleggera"). From 1948 to 1950 the company built 30 of these cars, of which 25 received the Barchetta open-seat two-seater (Italian "boat") from the Touring studio, designed by designer Carlo Felice Anderloni.
The chassis remained unchanged, but the 2-liter V12 engine with three carburetors was increased to 140 hp. The first such unit was installed on chassis # 002C, previously owned by one of two copies of the Ferrari 159 S (in turn derived from the Ferrari 125 S). Therefore, already at the end of 1947, Colombo increased the volume of cylinders to 1995 cm3, so that the cars could perform in the 2-liter class. This subsequently came in handy for the creation of the Ferrari 125 F1 car, which took part in the first season of Formula 1 in 1950. While developing the V12 engine for the first Ferrari (125 S), engineer Gioacchino Colombo limited its displacement to 1,497 cc, in line with the Grand Prix rules for compressor cars.
